How to make the most out of your loyalty schemes

Jude Thorne, CEO of the Ice loyalty programme, explains how to make the most of valuable loyalty points.

There are many loyalty schemes available in the UK and the average adult is signed up to at least three of them. Sometimes identifying which one will provide you with your best savings can be a chore. Here’s how you can ensure you are fully utilising your loyalty schemes and getting the best returns.

What’s going on in the sector right now?

The loyalty landscape has been slowly changing. Some of the biggest schemes are becoming less generous while other retailers, well known for their loyalty programmes, are reducing their involvement altogether. But all is not lost for the committed reward programmes customer thanks to a number of innovative new schemes that allow you to get the most for your hard-earned points.

Choose a scheme without restrictions

One of the biggest issues for us consumers is actually knowing how to use our hard-earned points and being able to spend them easily, with many retailers even putting restrictions on their loyalty schemes. These can include what you can spend points on, plus adding expiry dates and minimum amounts that you need to have to be able to use your points. This can cause us to disengage, sit on a points balance, and risk losing them altogether.

Instead, schemes like Ice can give you flexibility to spend or collect points, as many or as few as you like, at any retailer within the programme.

Reap the rewards effortlessly

With multi-retailer schemes, the savvy among us could make savings in three to four venues on a weekend. Say hello to more points, and extra options when you do decide to cash out on discounts and rewards. As Ice has travel companies like TUI and DFDS sitting alongside fashion shops like JoJo Maman Bébé, to dining out brands from Harvester and Browns to All Bar One and O’Neill’s, you could book your holiday with one Ice partner and celebrate it with a free pint at your local gastro pub. And because we partner with Mastercard®, all your purchases are tracked by them automatically, so you don’t need to carry another physical card to claim points or rewards.

Don’t let forgetfulness hamper you

Many of us have experience of leaving our loyalty card at home only to realise at the till, and lose our points because of it. Through Ice’s partnership with Mastercard®, your transactions will be tracked automatically at over 1,800 outlets like Harvester, JoJo Maman Bébé, Go Ape, Toby Carvery and many more. You’ll even get a text or email right after paying, to check if you’d like to spend your points or store them for future rewards. Say goodbye to checkout regret!

All these features become available to you when you sign up your existing Mastercard® credit card to your Ice account. Your card details are registered as a one off with Mastercard®. Ice won’t store your full card number and will never take a payment from your card. Mastercard® will then track your purchases automatically and securely. Ice understand how important it is to keep personal data safe online and have invested in secure systems with the highest level of Payment Card Industry (PCI DSS v3.2) attestation.

Keep up to date

Finally, regardless of what loyalty programmes you are signed up to, make sure to keep up to date with new offers and exclusive rewards that are running. Check your emails for updates as there may be weekends where certain retailers on the programme are running special promotions that will increase your rewards, or new places may be added where you can get rewards. Being savvy ensures you are always getting the best deals and the right opportunities to amass points for great rewards and discounts.
