Four ways to earn extra money on top of your job

Here, we look at some ways of getting a side hustle going for more cash in the bank at the end of the month.

Whether it's saving for a holiday, ditching debt, or just having a bit more cash each month, most of us will look for ways to bring in another source of income at some point. After all, who wouldn't want a bit more spending money that doesn't chip into their savings and salary?

Unfortunately, not all income boosting methods are practical or convenient, as many people don't have the time or energy to take on more work when they already have a full schedule. Luckily, there are at least a few ways you can make money on the side and boost your side hustle without having to bite off more than you can chew. Try one of the following methods.

1. Telecommuting jobs

Telecommuting is a great way to spend some of your at-home hours making money. There are often tons of companies hiring remote workers. While no experience or degrees are required (bonus!), you'll definitely stand a better chance of being hired if you're confident speaking on the phone or are fluently bilingual.

2. Freelancing

Signing up for freelancing sites is easy, but be aware that it may take a while before you land your first project or client. However, once you've earned that initial feedback and have gotten the hang of submitting effective proposals, you should be able to make a decent side income online if you're willing to put in the time to learn a digital trade like writing, web design, or marketing.

3. Blogging

If you enjoy writing (and are good at it), then you might want to start your own blog and set it up to generate income through adverts and other monetising website additions. It's a great way to build up residual revenue streams while also honing your writing and research skills. After a while, it will feel more like a hobby than a side job!

4. Consignment business

Compiling some of your own items, or finding cheap or even free items locally, and then selling them online for a profit has become a popular side income for many business-savvy people. There’s always a supply of gently used items at low prices as people upgrade to new things and sell their old stuff for a steep discount, which gives you the room to sell for more and hopefully double or even triple your cash investment. Boost that even more by selling some of your own unused items and quickly see profits rise.

5. Lottery, competitions and the occasional bet

Many of us just don’t have the time to take on another endeavour if we’re already busy with our current commitments. If this is the case, you could consider playing the lottery occasionally using sites like Lottoz, entering competitions which can be found here or placing a bet on your favourite sport. If you take this route, it’s important to maintain willpower and not get too carried away. Try doing it just a few times a month and if you win, put that money straight into savings.

Combining supplemental income streams

There’s no rule that says you can only just have one side hustle. In fact, all of the methods can be incorporated into one schedule quite easily as long as you've not allocated too much time to a single income method. You can still work part-time as a freelancer in the evenings while also doing some telecommuting and selling on consignment on the weekends.

In any case, finding more ways to invest your spare time and boosting your income is always going to be beneficial, regardless of which method you try first!
